It allows us to fully engage with our experiences, relationships, and the world around us. Practicing gratitude has many benefits that can greatly improve our overall well-being. See how stating your strengths and beliefs aloud to someone else feels. Ask a friend or family member to be your accountability partner for this exercise for a week. Remember the time before you said, «I love you,» and then the split-second after, there was a shift.
One simple habit to express gratitude is to start the day by writing down three things you’re grateful for. When we cultivate a habit of gratitude, we train our minds to focus on the positive aspects of our lives, which helps to shift our perspective and reduce feelings of negativity and stress. As mental health professionals, we can use tools like gratitude journals, daily reflections, and gratitude meditations to embed gratitude into every day (Seligman, 2011; Rao & Kemper, 2016). Gratitude can take many forms — often, the more creative, the better. Even small, everyday actions, such as a verbal thank-you or handwritten note, can have a significant emotional impact.
How Do I Practice Gratitude?
Everything is so digital these days, and you process so many messages daily that inspiration is becoming a lost art. More difficult is doing or stopping «the thing» for a solid week. And if a week seems too long, give it at least three days of a solid effort. And like it or not, you’ve probably been avoiding tackling them because of a lame, fill-in-the-blank excuse. Then make a plan to either do the opposite of it, or get rid of the excuses not to do it, and just start.
Immediately after writing their gratitude letters, the students also felt motivated to improve themselves. Scientists who have studied written gratitude interventions, such as gratitude letters or journals, have found benefits for an individual’s mental health and well-being. Gratitude practices also appear to help you feel more satisfied in life and can boost your self-esteem, according to peer-reviewed research.
When someone is having a hard day, a drink or snack can give them a boost. Or, if you know what they like to eat or drink, bring them back a surprise that will make them smile. To show someone that you’ve enjoyed all the good times you’ve spent together, combine photos, tickets, and other souvenirs in a special scrapbook.
Grateful Intention
- Doing this reflection helps to grow feelings of gratitude and appreciation for others.
- One nice thing about this template is that you can start your week on whichever day works for you since the days are labeled “Day 1” through “Day 7” instead of Sunday through Monday.
- Challenge your inner critic with thoughts of thankfulness, which will immediately turn your negative thoughts into positive ones.
- Being mindful of help in the kitchen, or the color of the sky allows us to generate gratitude by simply noticing them.
For example, you could run a stress management workshop or bring in a massage therapist to give chair massages. If you are helping children to appreciate the benefits of thankfulness, we recommend that you use our Gratitude Gifts tool. This tool uses simple language to explain the concept of gratitude, then invites the client to come up with things that they are grateful for in a fun writing or drawing exercise.
With consistency, you’ll find yourself noticing more reasons to be grateful in your daily life. Start your day on a positive note by incorporating a morning gratitude affirmation into your routine. As soon as you wake up, take a moment to express appreciation for the new day ahead. This simple act encourages you to actively seek out moments of appreciation throughout your day. As the jar fills up over time, you’ll have a tangible representation of all the good in your life. Keep a stack of notecards or a dedicated journal for your thank-you messages. theamoredate.com
Do you think you could stop complaining for 21 days straight? Complaining feels good because it gets out our negative feelings. Switching from our complaints to all life’s goodness will enhance our lives. These tools can help establish consistency by sending reminders, offering rewards for milestones, and visualizing progress, which reinforce motivation.
